In the first place, I'm not your "Dear". You can address me by my screen name. In the second place, "Layout" is old terminology for "Paperspace".

I'm fully aware of what you want to accomplish and posted the only reference thread I could find that would accomplish what you're interested in doing.

I'm sure someone that uses that technique regularly will see your post and give you specific advise.

Afrazawan:

Did you at least try the technique as explained in the link that Cat provided?

What have YOU tried so far? We don't want to make suggestions that you have tried and found to be unacceptable.

Have you tried creating the second smaller viewport with the "detail" in it and placing it atop the large viewport? What happened? Was the output not satisfactory?

And don't refer to me as "dear" either. Thanks.

Here is a possible solution as suggested by AutoDesk itself and posted on its website. It uses a circular viewport over a much larger rectangular viewport but I don't think the shape matters at all. It could be another rectangle like you pictured in your image or it could be a 6-sided polygon. Read and try. Then get back to us with your comments. Become part of the solution.

Cat,

You have it backwards, Paperspace is old terminology, Layout is the new terminology.

You are absolutely right rkent. I guess I was more focused on curbing my natural tendency to eat people who refer to me as "dear" at the time. o:)

To Cat,

Maybe afrazawan inserted 'dear' with the intention of putting your screen name afterwards, but then was focussed on their query and so forgot to insert your screen name? I don't know, just a thought

I do this type of inset viewport on a regular basis. Here's my (possibly clunky) scheme.

Draw a rectangle around the inset area in model space. That will serve as the visible border on the main plan and as the boundary for the inset viewport. Put it on a layer that will be visible in the main plan, but don't dress it up yet.

In paper space, trace over the rectangle you just drew in model space. If it needs to be a larger scale, as yours seems to, then scale it up by the ratio between the plan and the inset. For instance, if the main plan is 1"=20' and the inset is 1"=10', that is a 2:1 ratio.

Now the tricky part. Go to the View menu, open Viewports, pick Object, and select the rectangle. Go into model space to line up the first rectangle with the second rectangle; they don't have to meet exactly at this time. You may need to turn off the main viewport to work with the inset viewport.

Go back to paper space. Set the scale for the inset viewport. It helps to lock it once you set the scale. With the plan viewport on, drag the corners of the inset rectangle to match the corners of the plan rectangle. Move your inset to its new location. Now you can add the annotation.

maybe this will help if he sees the objects with the commands written down as well.

Top one is as ReMark posted from autodesk.

Bottom one is probably similar to CyberAngel's. Also for accurately placing viewport you can use Defpoints Layer and CHSPACE command to help.
