Skybeorn Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I understand the idea behind Xref's, and this might not be its intended use but i thought maybe some could perhaps help me or give me an idea for a better method! What i am trying to accomplish Is to Xref a "Gold" drawing into a new drawing. I can accomplish this no probelm. My question though is: Is it possible for one to edit the Xref without affecting the "Gold" File? And at the same time is it possible to have the "Gold" file reflect changes that are made in it? To clarify, i am drawing egress plans for fire and tornado evacuation. The building i am drawing is in a "T" shape. For me to effectively produce the egress plans by room on 8.5 X 11 sheet it is neccssary for me to split the three wings apart in the Model Space. ( see model Space Screen Shot) However When I Split these three wings I have to bind the Xref, I was wondering is it possible to split the three wings without binding the xref, And, if i did accomplish this would things such as walls and other modifications be reflected in the egress drawings just by updating the "gold" file. Maybe i am overcomplicating the procedure so any suggestions would be great! AutoCad 2009 Windows XP Thanks Andy Quote
numberOCD Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 If you are trying to split the drawing just for different prints you don't need to make any changes of the shapes and lines in the model space. You can easily have multiple layouts and make the viewport(s) of each layout show only what you intend to be seen on the layout. If you have hassles with certain lines overlapping between layouts, you can designate each specific layout section its own set of layers and just freeze the unneeded layers in each viewport. (For this next paragraph, "File B" is referring to the file where you have imported the xref, and "File X" is the file you have imported as an Xref) As for your original question, you cannot make any edits to objects of the xref without opening File X. If you do edit File X, the changes will not be visible on the File B until you right click the xref's description on the xref list (command:XREF) and select "Reload." You CAN however adjust the layers of the xref in File B but those layer edits will only be in File B; File X will be unchanged. Quote
Skybeorn Posted June 9, 2010 Author Posted June 9, 2010 Thanks, NumberOCD. So it is to my understanding that you would suggest making a different paperspace model for each room that needs an egress print, sounds fair enough, thats a lot of layouts! Thanks for the answere to my Xref Questions as well. Quote
