chemicalboy Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Hey guys can anyone help me with harness? I need to 3D sketch the wires path because the wires is interfering with other parts in my assembly, also I need to connect two wires from two sources together with some sort of connector..I'm uploading pics of the problems i have.. JD Mather Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I see you are using Inventor Professional - are you using the Routed Systems? You should be able to add nodes to your routes and move as needed. Since you most likely can't attach an assembly the size of what you show - can you create a simple mock-up assembly that exhibits the same behavior? What about the built-in Tutorials, have you gone through those? Any training in Routed Systems? Quote
chemicalboy Posted May 2, 2010 Author Posted May 2, 2010 no i didnt have harness training..yea i followed the tutorial and it just showed me how to make pins and connectors and i did that perfectly..i dont know how to use the routed system or make nodes..can u illustrate please? I can make the mock up model if that's necessary..here's a pic of how my harness looks in the browser, also do u know how to connect two wires from two sources? Quote
JD Mather Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 i followed the tutorial and it just showed me how to make pins and connectors... Hmmm, it has been several years since I learned routed systems. Seems to me there is a file named something like *RoutedSys*.pdf in the inventor program folder that goes more in-depth. Also search the Help>Learning Tools>Skillbuilders and.... Search http://au.autodesk.com online classes (particularly older classes, I didn't see anything at recent AU) on Routed Systems for wire harness routing. Check the older AU papers at http://www.augi.com as well. As I recall this is a difficult topic without classroom instructor led training. I think there is a book here as well http://store.autodesk.com/DRHM/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayProductDetailsPage&SiteID=adsk&Locale=en_US&Env=BASE&productID=139544400 Quote
shift1313 Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Chemicalboy, when you are trying to create a cable/harness routed system you start by selecting Cable/harness on the Assemble tab of your assembly. It will create a harness file located in your project directory. As you stated you already went through pin creation. Pins are needed for you to create wires or cables. They are basically points that inventor knows can start or end a wire. In your case with bringing two wires into one, you will want to make a splice. In the following images i modified my base plate(from the other example) and added a few holes and a cable guide. At the bottom of the holes I added pins. I also created a work axis at each hole to help me lay out my segments. I start a harness a click on the segment button. A segment is used as a path for wires. Its not needed. You can create a wire without a segment but i find its easier most of the time to create a segment. I create a segment using arc center points of the holes and at both ends of my cable guide. The spline created will follow rules setup in the harness properties like min radius and diameter. You can edit these properties before or after if you wish. After the segment is created you can then create your wire. It will automatically be a straight line from pin1 to pin2. After your wire is created you can select Route. It will let you select the wire and then select a segment(single if you wish) to have the wire follow. In the third image you see a little different strategy, i created 3 different segments and routed the wire through each 1 individually. This can be used if you have multiple points you want the wire to go through but the rest doesnt really matter. Quote
kencaz Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 You can also add points to the wires themselves to get around interfering objects. KC Quote

One thing ive never been able to do is add points to a wire path and have them snap to something, like an arc center point or maybe another work point. Its always been a 3dmove operation with no precise input. It always seemed odd to me but i guess thats why there are segments for precise routing options. Quote
chemicalboy Posted May 2, 2010 Author Posted May 2, 2010 Ken speakin of those points where do i get them?and how to use them? shift thanks dude thats was a great help...but I still dunno how to create splices?..also I just realized there is a "page 2" for the other thread that's why i didnt notice ur last reply Quote

If you right click on the point and "Redefine Point" and you should be able to move it to a surface, edge, or work point. Chemicalboy: You can add points to wires, (in edit mode), by right clicking on the wire and selecting "Add Points" I don't think, however, it will work if you try running a 3d path. I think it's best to assign a wire type at each node. KC Quote

Not bad but slightly annoying if you want that setting for other things. Thanks for the tip! Quote
