manddarran Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Is any body using any third party legend creating tools? Recommendations? We have tons of block in our drawings and are looking to some what automate legend creation based on the block and the layer it is on and the attributes it contains if any. Does anything out there exist? I have googled to not much avail. Quote
JohnM Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 i beleive you can do what you want with autocad's table. unless i am just missing what you are asking Quote
manddarran Posted April 14, 2010 Author Posted April 14, 2010 I have been digging thru that, but I couldn't find anywhere to have it depend on what layer the block was on. Quote
JohnM Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 What about the attribute extraction tool? Could you give a lot more detail and example on what you want it to do? Quote
MarcoW Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I believe Manddarran wants to have a copy of each block used in the drawing, or selections set, and put hose copies in an overview. Haven't thought about it making automatically, I allways have a standard legenda... Quote
manddarran Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 That is correct. Our users have to generate a custom legend just about for each project and it is kind of aggravating and I was going to try and automate the process as much as I can. For example when we do renovation work, we will have a receptacle block on three different layers to determine if it is removed, remain or new, the same thing with lights of different kinds and some jobs have fire alarm and some don't. We have lights with attributes that are also on different layers.... Was wandering if there was anything out there that might work as this isn't going to be an easy lsp task. Quote
alanjt Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 It could be done, but it would be a task to take on. Seems to be a lot of specifics, which rules out something seemingly generic. Quote

That is what I figured. I was hoping that there might be a 3rd party type of solution. This is a larger task than I am really up for. Quote

Land Desktop had a really nice one for blocks, but it wasn't carried over into Civil 3D (not that any of it helps you). I started the coding to replicate it, but got side-tracked and haven't thought about it until today. However, it seems what you are asking is a lot more involved. If you are going to tackle this, you really need to get everything ironed out ahead of time. Figure out everything and exactly what you want displayed in the legend. Quote
manddarran Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 Figure out everything and exactly what you want displayed in the legend. Got this part figured out as we have a large legend we insert and we just start erasing what is not on the drawing and then moving stuff to make it line up. It is a rather large dwg too ..... Quote
alanjt Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I would say 95% Hmm, maybe I'll dig up what I was working on a start on this project again. Well, at least after finals are over. Quote
MarcoW Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I did a quick search and found this one: http://www.cadforum.cz/cadforum_en/automatically-generated-picture-legend-of-drawing-blocks-tip6724 With all credits to the original author of course, I believe it is Xanadu. It is a trial so it is not fully free but it can give you and others willing to help you an idea of how it could work. What catches my interest is how the "registration" part works... But that is to be a new thread one day I believe... Quote
manddarran Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 That is pretty slick. I have been testing the Block Legend from Dotsoft as well and it works pretty much the same way, using descriptions. What I am find is that the way we do things doesn't really work with that as we will have a duplex receptacle on the remain layer and on the remove layer and the description is the same....the layer is just different... meant to include a link: http://www.dotsoft.com/toolpac.htm Quote
