dazoro Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Hi everyone, I am hoping to get help from you on this problem I have in my system: I am using an AutoCAD 2008 running on Windows Vista Ultimate (32Bit). My problem is when I save my file(s) in my PC's hard disk, I may not be able to reopen it after closing the program. What I always do is to save my files in a usb stick to be able to reopen after sometime (e.g. for edition). Worse is I can not either delete, copy or move the AutoCAD files in my hard disk. I have to reboot my system in safe mode to do file manipulation but sometimes also don't work. Does anyone knows about this problem and its solution? Please, please help...! Regards - dazoro Quote
ReMark Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 That does not sound like an AutoCAD problem. Sounds more like a problem with Windows. What about other types of files? Quote
dazoro Posted March 19, 2010 Author Posted March 19, 2010 I can manipulate (open, delete, move or simply read and write) almost every other files saved in my hard disk except for CAD files (*.dwg). I have also gone through to some windows vista forums to ask the same problem and try some suggested system settings but still the same thing is bothering me... Quote
MikeScott Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 "almost" every other file except for CAD? Can you manipulate other file types that are in the same directory as the drawing file? If not, you might have your permission security settings set-up wrong for what you're doing. Make sure your Vista upgrades are up-to-date and installed too. Autocad can't do anything to a file that prevents it from being moved/deleted/etc. Unless you had a power interruption or autocad crashed and it closed/locked the file.. but even then, you should be able to do stuff to it if you're accessing it with your operating system's explorer window. Unless someone/something has the file open while you're trying to manipulate it? Quote
dazoro Posted March 19, 2010 Author Posted March 19, 2010 Yes Mike, I can manipulate files in the same directory as the drawing file (e.g. my documents) except cad files. I am also aware that Autocad has nothing to do with it and I am suspecting it is on my vista system settings but I have a limited knowledge in finding the correct settings to solve this problem. I am pretty sure a drawing file is not in use or opened (but I am not sure if something is accessing, e.g. system files but surely not a virus) when I am trying to manipulate. An example is when I try to move a .dwg file to another directory, the move/copy dialog will keep on discovering the item almost forever, lol, I tried it to wait for 30minutes but nothing happen, please see screen shot below. Another example is when I try to access its properties by right click on the drawing file then properties, the dialog window doesn't appear. Also when I try to reopen in Autocad, the program freezes or is not responding anymore and cause it to crash. Quote
MikeScott Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Well.. this might, or might not help, but I found that certain file manipulations worked better when they were in a short directory tree. Meaning, instead of C:\Documents and Settings\Dantz\Documents\CAD Forum\etc.. Something like C:\CADfiles\ Older versions of CAD would refuse to save correctly if there was more than one space in the directory name, or if the path name was simply too long. The chances of this making a difference these days might be slim but it might be worth trying out. Also, I've found SIGNIFICANTLY increased effectiveness when I forced my Outlook to archive any file older than two weeks, and emptied my recycle bin. You also have AutoCAD, 3d Max (I think), Outlook, Excell, Firefox, and who knows what else, running at the same time. That's a lot. Hopefully, you also don't have that cad file open in AutoCAD while trying to do stuff with it. Another AutoCAD glitch I noticed was that every file you open has a hidden temporary file that opens up and stays open until you close that file, if you "save as," you open another temporary file, but the original temporary files won't actually close until you close the final file.. no matter what it's named at that point. Hope this all helps somehow. Quote
dazoro Posted March 20, 2010 Author Posted March 20, 2010 Thanks Mike for trying to help me out to this problem. I have tried to experiment following your comments above but still I am not in a success. I tried to save a file directly in drive C (root directory) and have other programs not running at the same time but my big problem is still persisting. I remembered saving my dwg files in my hard disk very fine for manipulation for a few months when my laptop is new but after a series of windows update, this damn problem existed. I thought of restoring windows to earlier time before the updates but I also want to have windows up to date and thus ignoring my problem that time until now that I found it really unusual and uncomfortable to me in my ACAD operations. I will appreciate any further comments and solution try outs, thanks in advance. Quote
