cmjay83 Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Hi all im currently runnig SW2010, struggling to create a plane round a cylinder. found it pretty easy in 2009 as it gives you an option. But in this I can't find anything. Thanks Quote
shift1313 Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 well the defintion of a plane prevents it from being curved. You can create revolved surfaces or swept/lofted surfaces. What are you trying to do with it? That may help give a better answer for you. Quote
Maximusmountain Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Not really sure what your trying to do. however, here are several options, if you want to wrap something AROUND the cyclinder you can use the "wrap" button in which is above "dome" in the features section. this creates a flat plane at a tangent to the cylindrical object and then once you have done your drawing it will wrap it around the object and you can then build it out or cut it into the cylinder. Other than that, just create X amounts of planes around the object and cut/build into/onto it. Quote
shift1313 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I dont think wrap creates a plane. Its a combination of several steps that arent shown. It uses the Project Curves To prject them onto the main surface and it performs the cut or extrude out to an offset surface. Does it actually create a plane in your design tree when you use it? CMJ, if you truely just want to sketch on a 3d surface, start a 3d sketch and you can draw a spline on a plane. Other than that you will need to project your 2d sketches onto either a surface or face of a solid using the Curves button. The On Surface option in plane creation was creating a plane with a tangency to a surface at a point and not actually wrapping the surface. Quote

On 2009 when i last created a wrap it created a plane for me, so it did do that, not sure if it does that on 2007 as the student liscense ran out in 2008 and school didnt get solidworks until 2009.. was autodesk before. i still prefer it. shift1313 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 im using 09 currently but it doesnt create a plane or any other geometry with the wrap feature. If you Click Wrap without having a sketch it will go into sketch mode. This however will not let you select a curved face but only a planar one. Quote
Maximusmountain Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 That is kind of what i meant, you dont have to create anything or do anything, you draw it and it does it for you. If that is what Cmjay is asking for, then it will sure be helpful! Quote

If that is what Cmjay is asking for, then it will sure be helpful! Well yes that works if you select a planar edge(top or bottom of my cylinder). In my screen shot i used the front plane to draw my wrap boss prior to selecting the Wrap feature. In this screen shot i have drawing a spline in 2d and projected it onto a 3d surface. I believe this is what he wanted to have a sketch on a curved surface. This is helpful when triming surfaces, creating 3d paths for sweeps or lofts and so on. The only thing i know you can draw on a surface/face is a spline though. The rest i believe have to be projected. Quote
