jblengton Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Hi All I am struggling to extrude a path on the surface of a sphere. I am using autocad 2010. I tried using the push/pull command as well, but no luck. Autocad gives me the following error "Cannot sweep or extrude non-planar objects". If I understand the error message correctly, it is saying that my profile that I want to use has to be straight and not curved as on the surface of a sphere? If this is correct, are there any other commands to achieve the extrusion? Thanks in advance for the help Attached is the dwg and an image to illustrate my question Extrude_Profile.pdf extrude1.dwg Quote
JD Mather Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I don't follow. Is that supposed to be a path or a profile? (It can only be used as a path, not a profile. You are missing a profile to Sweep). Maybe more information on your design intent is needed. Are you starting a new thread on an old question? http://www.cadtutor.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41260&highlight=sphere Quote
jblengton Posted December 7, 2009 Author Posted December 7, 2009 Sorry for being a bit ambigious. No i do not wish to sweep a profile across the lines on the surface. I want to actually use the closed loop of lines on the surface of the sphere and extrude it outwards. So the closed loop of lines will be the profile of the extrusion. Make any sense? The design is a globe and there are organically shaped 'flames' that encircle the globe and then leave the globe at the poles. I can attach a picture of image i am trying to convert into 3d. Quote
JD Mather Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 I can attach a picture of image i am trying to convert into 3d. I don't quite understand. If you can supply additional information why are you holding it back? I think you are going about this the wrong way if I understand what you are after. Looks like a simple extrude of a 2D profile and a Slice with surface to match offset of sphere. WAG given the information supplied. Quote
Unmentioned Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 try seperating the lines on the sphere into different sections (or hemispheres) on the sphere. Then try extruding each of the section individually. Hmm this does sound diffcult. If it doesn't have to be solid, I would try to copy the lines, then scale up the copy of the lines using the center of the sphere as a base point. Then from there try lofting the lines to make your surface. Quote
kencaz Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 I would first create a sphere the diameter I want then convert to surface and extrude my profile through it and then slice. KC Quote
