Sketchup or AutoCAD

Hi,

I would like to expand my 2D knowledge to 3D...(kinda bored at work. Thought its a good time to start :P )

We are working with AutoCAD 2007 atm and i downloaded the free version of Sketchup.

Our office designs tracks and sport fields.

Any suggestions what would be better to leran AutoCAD 3D or Sketchup???

Thanks for your input

SU will be easier and it can be used with AutoCAD. No reason it has to be one or the other. Use them together. ;)

the only obstruction to learning both is that SketchUp 'thinks' very differently to AutoCAD, so can be infuriating to start with - then you go back to AutoCAD and can't make it do some of the things SketchUp does so well (once you've got the hang of them)!

Good luck and have fun learning, whichever you choose!

Thanks,

I had played around in Sketchup a little bit and really liked the Scenes you can than turn into a little movie :P. Since its the free Sketchup version i cant bring the drawing back in autocad which is not so great.:( I seen some AutoCad rendering and was quite impressed how realistic it can look where in Sketchup all is kinda cartoonisch.

I am still not sure since i dont think i have the time to learn both.

I guess i just keep playing with both. Its kinda hard to learn since we only require 3D modeling like 3 times a year so its not needed so much.

Well don't forget that you can always use the free rendering engine Kerkythea with the free SU to get great images.

You can never have too many tools in your tool belt! ;)

+1, use both AutoCAD and SketchUP...

there are a ton of great programs, esp Kerkythea (which I use) that I find have amazing results... check out our SketchUp section!

Yeah CADken, the more "weapons" you have the better the pay! One trick ponies are a "dime a dozen". ;)

One word Sketchup if your only purpose is doing 3d models or renderings. There are alot of great renders out there that are free as well.

I would learn both myself which in fact is exactly what im doing. I find sketchup to be best for creating really quick ideas for initial proposals but I think that using AutoCAD will help me in the area I'm lacking for creating more professional quality 3D.

Saying that sketchup dose seem to impress those iv shown my work too, just a good job they don't know how easy it was to learn.

Seriously you could train a monkey to use that program!

Also been trying out Blender too which is another decent and free program to use.

Good luck with Blender. I wish I had a $1 for every time I have tried to use that beast! ;)
