I'm taking and existing drawing and trying to update the existing surface (1 of 3) using a new surface provided to me of the work area.

I'm wondering what would be the best way since I already have Alignments, Profiles and Corridors/assemblies built and dont want to lose the data just update it.

My thought was to just delete the old surface through Prospector,

then insert the new surface using the same surface name.

I know I am missing something:D

What do you guys think?

I believe that if you delete the surface in Prospector, you will lose all your Corridor targets. This may not be a big deal, though, if you can use the option to "Set All Targets" to your new EG surface in the Corridor Properties. On the other hand, if you have various assemblies that are all targeting different surfaces, it gets trickier.

I believe this sort of thing is rather easy if your EG surface is in another drawing, and then added to your Corridor drawing via a data shortcut. Then I think should be able to just change the surface in the other drawing. Then when you open the Corridor drawing again (or synchronize the data references), you should see the new surface.

I think I've also seen people using LandXML to update surfaces definitions without deleting them. You might be able to manage something like that.

where is the "Set All Targets" option? we were looking for something like that today, when, after pasting a surface into another, the one i pasted was a grade to existing grade, but my main surface was not. when i pasted it in, the entire thing starting referencing the existing surface and my contours went nuts, ruining my entire pond.

Thanks Sinc, Unfortunatly I set up the corridor in the same dwg as the Tin.

I like your idea of xrefing it - makes alot of sense. I was never sure if the corridor would go to the surface since it was an xref.

It also will not let me delete the surface at this point since I have data associated to it. So other than redoing the dwg I'm not sure were to go from here.

Alan - select your corridor - right click - pick "corridor properties - Under Parameters select "Target" for you region

Once there look under Object name and select " Click here to set all"

Ok - well I managed to copy the surface from One dwg to the next but it

took almost 15 minutes to paste! (simply use the copy by basepoint like you would a block)

My fingers were hovering over Cntl Alt delete but I'm happy I didn't do it.

Looks like it worked ok - now I just need to reassociate everything to the new surface. I'll post any progress or lack of progress.

Whats interesting is even though the two surfaces (old and new ones)

are labeled differently, when I bring in the new surface I specified that I

wanted the numbers to be replaced as opossed to renumbering them.

So C3d replaced all the numbers and deleted the old surface automaticly.

Very nice!

Use xml to export and import surfaces very fast. If your new surface is only a portion of the original surface then add a Surface and use edits to paste the original then new thus creating a newer combined surface.

Not sure but open the two drawings at same time and use prospector to drag and drop between drawings may be faster than copy and paste.

Drag and drop with a surface only works if you have no data associated

with the surface such as profiles etc.

I was really surprized that cut and paste worked so well since it was a surface

after all. But so far everything is working out perfect. I had to go in and

repoint the corridor to the new surface but that was an easy task.

I'll try XML next time and see how that works.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!
