Is there a way to get rid of all of the styles im not using, we have all our styles in a dwg template, and thats what we use to create a new drawing, is there a way to get rid of the styles so it gets rid of all of the layers that are only being used in a style not actually in the drawing?

Not entirely sure exactly what you're asking, but if styles in C3D work like ACA you can purge then from the style manager. Open the style manager, select the drawing file from the tree to the left (not the template) and then click the broom icon. Once the styles are purged, close the manager and the run the PURGE command like normal to remove the unused layers.

Alternatively, you could begin with a blank drawing and use the style manager to copy over only those styles you need. This is a simple drag and drop operation performed exclusively in the tree view in the left pane.

I think what he is talking about is you need a style for just about everything in CIV3d ours are all assigned different layers our template has 519 layers purged 73 layers compare to our blank title block template 6 layers but the drawings the same ?

If I open a Civ3d job can not purge near as many layers. CIV3d seems to hold the layers that it might use ! eg 655 layers purged now 195 but 19 layers are c-topo-xxxxx these are linked to contours etc Wether I have used the contours or not. Only way to reduce is to edit the styles to use common layers. Removing the layers at start means CIV3d puts the stuff on the layer 0 thats a nightmare.

Editing the styles can be so time consuming hence we live with it and have only changed a few as deemed realy necessary. PS the styles were created by our cad dealer originally as I say a massive task.

My company has hired someone that used to work at our cad dealer, so his job is making styles and setting everything up. He is also created our ctb files also. So our drawing template has all these layers in it that are being used in a C3D style, and when layers are used in styles you can not purge them out, and i have a few simple drawings with all these layers in them.... i just want a the layers i need. I have gone in and deleted styles and able to purge some layers.... but there is still more.

Have you tried LAYDEL to remove the layers? It seems like I had done that in the past and it worked, yet the styles retained their layer settings.

I just created a new drawing with the acad.dwt, out of the box template... and mapped over the objects i wanted. Its a work around, but it works.

LAYDEL doesn't work unfortunately I think its just a inherent problem with CIV3D you should be able to define a style layer colour etc and it makes it if it doesn't exist. Running Civ3d in say a blank template without the layers puts objects on the 0 layer. Not sure about 2010 will check.

You can use LAYDEL in 2009 and it will delete the layer.

You can use LAYDEL, but it removes the layer from any Styles that are using it, and the Styles may no longer function as you wish. There is no way to purge unused Styles.

Most people just live with it, and get used to having lots of unused layers and styles in their drawings. Some try to fight it for a while, but most usually end up deciding that fighting it is a waste of time.

You can also create a file w/o a template.
