Beginner: help with modelling 3d curved solids
dementia posted a topic in AutoCAD 3D Modelling & Rendering
Dear community, I'm a relatively new acad user, somewhat managing myself well with 2d drawing, and venturing into 3d drawing and modelling. I've struggled with some curved parts for the hull of a vehicle I'm designing, especially bringing it to be a solid object. I've been able to achieve the surfaces of the body I was looking forward to compose, however, I'm having what seems to be a very common problem, no watertight envelope. I've read about it and seems that Inventor is capable of stitching these minimal holes in the envelope. I acquired the program but really don't know how to use it. Could someone help me sealing this up to make a solid, whether it's inventor or autocad? My filesize is too big (more than 1mb), so cannot attach directly, here is download link instead: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ouzd1tzt3jll933/hull%20quarter.dwg?dl=0 Thannks! -
Drawing/modelling rib vaults in Autocad
tomdeturck posted a topic in AutoCAD 3D Modelling & Rendering
I'm a master student constructional engineering Does anybody have an idea how I should go about drawing rib Vaults in AutoCad. I have to make a 3D model of a belfry tower so I can import it into Finite Element Software (ANSYS workbench). To make it even worse, the tower has 4way, 5way and 6way rib vaults. FML... I do not have the radius of the rib vaults, only heights/distances on a 2D plan. I guess I could import the 2D image and somehow try to get a fitting circle segment. Any thoughts? -
AutoCAD 3D vs Revit for Structural Plans and Renderings
CheSyn posted a topic in AutoCAD Beginners' Area
I have extensive experience with AutoCAD - but I would like to start learning/using Revit. The majority of use would be for residential applications. From my understanding, Revit is mainly used for floor plans, leaving "space" for building materials, but not placing materials themselves. A client has asked for a 3D rendering of a proposed deck on his house (for visualization and "instructions"), as well as orthographic 2D plans to submit for permits. I have done this many times with AutoCAD, but was wondering if this was a task Revit could help expediate. Am I better off layering a 3D AutoCAD drawing with all materials sized and placed appropriately, or is this a task Revit would excel at? Thank you in advance for any insight and advice.- 8 replies

Incorporating Google Maps Street View
ScottnSharrer posted a topic in AutoCAD 3D Modelling & Rendering
Today while at work, the vice president of the company came to me with questions regarding AutoCAD and Google Street View. Has anyone heard of a way to incorporate Google Street View into AutoCAD?? Trying to do this because the company just purchased a new building and will be relocating. Have drawings that need to be done for renovations that will be taking place and the owner would like to see how these renovations will change the appearance of the building before the work is complete. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Please email me at hrierie@gmail.com again thank you. Scott -
