I need to build a dial with 360 degree marks and numbers on it like a protractor. I have no clue how to accomplish this. Will someone please tell or show me how to do this? I would really appreciate it!

Well I have a protractor done in AutoCAD. Would that help?

What is your experience level with Max? Have you used the program before?

Also, how detailed does this need to be? Does it have to be a realistic, high poly, model or can you just use textures and bump maps?

I have only been using it for a short while. It needs to have some dimension. I am trying to make a dial like a stove would have except the outer ring would be the angles and the dial itself would rotate within. I want to be able to rotate the dial and align it with a certain degree marked on the outer ring.

How long is "a short while"? A day, a week, a month? Do you know the basics of the program and how to use the various modeling tools or are you brand new to the program. I could probably put together a tutorial for this, but I would need to know more about it. Do you have any photos or sketches of the dial, with dimensions, that you could post here? Also, what is this for? Is this a school assignment?

I have been using it for about two months. I dont have any photos or sketches. I am just trying to figure out how to build the basic model. Picture a timer with the dial in the middle and the time in minutes around the dial afixed to the housing. the only thing is I need to have angles represented rather than time. I was hoping someone more capable than I could point me in the right direction as I have none. I am not doing this for school it's just a project. I would greatly appreciate any guidance you could throw my way.

Well, I started to put together a tutorial, but it was getting very technical and very long so I stopped. If you've been using Max for 2 months, then you should be familiar with the program and you should know enough of the basics to at least get started on this project. You can post screenshots of your progress and ask questions as you move along, and I can help you when you get stuck, but this is your project so you should be doing all the work, not me. :P

 

Here's a tip: You should never start modeling anything until you have worked out the design with pencil and paper first. Work out the details and determine the dimensions and how it all fits together. Have a clear idea of what you want to achieve before you begin modeling. This will save you a lot of wasted time and headaches in the long run. That's why I asked if you had any reference images or sketches. This is a crucial first step before starting any project.

Yes, once you start to figure it all out it will become much more enjoyable, but when you are just starting out, it can be very frustrating. Do you have any books or training DVD's? That's how I learned. Training DVD's are the best way to learn, in my opinion.
